Manual Versus Motorised Window Awnings

by John

Window awnings have been popular additions to Australian homes for many years now, and with good reason. As well as adding elegance and comfort to our homes, they effectively help us to control the presence of heat, sunlight and UV rays. An important aspect to consider when making a purchase is whether you prefer a manual or a motorised awning. Whilst both will provide excellent protection, there are some points to keep in mind:

Convenience

Manual window awnings might seem simple and easy to operate, but the remote control functionality of the motorised alternative is even easier – thus making it the more convenient option. This is particularly true when dealing with larger areas (where a manual covering may become bulky and cumbersome) and hard-to-reach areas. When placed on a timer, they can even operate whilst you’re not at home!

Cost

The convenience of motorisation will usually come at a price. In some cases, they can run in the few thousand dollar range (depending on their size and how many you’re installing). Since manual awnings are manufactured without any electronic components, they tend to be cheaper. Couple this with the fact that they are also usually simpler and easier to install, and you can see why they’re the more affordable option.

Durability

Although certain components (such as the crank handle or the internal electronics) may become damaged or fail unexpectedly, the lifespan of the product is generally determined by the quality, plus the care and maintenance it receives. Both manual and motorised awnings are manufactured from quality materials and components, plus can withstand most severe weather conditions (such as wind and rain).

Function

It stands to reason that the main difference between manual and motorised awnings is how they operate. The former are mostly operated via a crank system with a removable handle (to prevent it from creating a hazard), whilst the latter works electronically and can be operated with a remote control (so it will open and close at the touch of a button). The motorised option also has a manual override in case of power outage.

Style

Both types of window awning are available in a variety of style and material options, ensuring that you can find one that fits the design of your home and your décor preferences. When it comes to style, motorised is often considered the more elegant option for the primary reason that there are no extra cranks, cords or handles that could clash with the sleek design of the window covering as a whole.

We hope that the information provided above has enabled you to make a final decision between manual and motorised awnings. Although there is no right or wrong choice, it is important that you are completely happy with your selection to ensure that it will offer you many years of use. With so many different window awnings on the market (and with the ability for many of them to be motorised), we are sure that you will be spoilt for choice.
